GROUPS LAUD CALL FOR POLITICAL PARTIES TO FIND COMMON GROUND

THE STAR, KUALA LUMPUR, 20 Apr 2009 : The Sultan of Perak’s call for political parties to find a common ground to work together for the good of the country and people has been well received by various quarters.

Malay Unity Action Front president Osman Abu Bakar said Sultan Azlan Shah’s suggestion was timely as it could help forge unity, in line with the 1Malaysia concept of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“All quarters, whether from the Government or Opposition, must help strengthen unity among the races and people in the country,” he said in response to the Sultan’s call in his speech at the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the Ruler’s 81st birthday celebration.

The Sultan said excessive politicking had affected the country’s economic productivity and its image internationally.

Sultan Azlan Shah also touched on the actions of certain political groups in inciting the people to create trouble and hate the monarchy besides tarnishing its image, describing them as dangerous actions which could disrupt the country’s harmony.

Perkasa president Datuk Ibrahim Ali, who is also Pasir Mas MP, said there would be no conflict if political parties did not question matters as the position of the Malay Rulers and the special rights of the Malays.

He said all quarters should therefore understand the Federal Constitution and refrain from raising sensitive issues.

The Malays Professionals Organisation (ProWaris) President Feriz Omar said the Sultan’s suggestion was achievable through a consultative system that acknowledged the needs and wants of minority groups as something that could be achieved.

He said this was also in tune with the 1Malaysia concept. — Bernama
